How we test

The reasons behind our recommendations.

Published specifications. Clear comparisons. A preference you can understand.

What we compare

Capacity, material, power, cleaning and filter upkeep form the five areas of our equipment comparisons. We read the maker’s listing for the named model and record when it was checked. Offers and product descriptions can change.

Price is a purchase consideration alongside those areas. We do not infer a saving from two default offers that may describe different configurations, bundles or subscriptions.

What the word test means here

Our method is desk research and editorial comparison. We have not run a laboratory trial, measured a dog’s water intake or independently tested battery runtime. Product photographs supplied by a maker are labelled as such; illustrative images are not evidence of a hands on test.

Why there are no scores

A missing specification is not a low measured result. We therefore do not award a numerical score to an unpublished figure or combine unlike claims into a scientific looking total. Each recommendation explains its reasons in words.

The Doggy Fountain is our everyday pick for its combination of reservoir sizes, power choices and stated cleaning arrangement. Other products may fit different priorities, and the comparisons say where that is the case.

Keeping the record useful

We date the product information, distinguish an editorial preference from a published specification and link related guides so readers can examine a choice from more than one angle. Check the maker’s current configuration and instructions before purchase.
